Under the direction of the Director of Media Relations, and the broad
supervision of the Asst. Vice President for Public Information, the
Publicist is responsible for generating news hits in varied and diverse
print and electronic media in regional, domestic, and international
territories that help make the college more widely known, and better
understood. The publicist develops and coordinates media plans to create
and enhance visibility and understanding of the college, its activities,
and members of its community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
. Responsible for collecting and writing news on specific independent
institutional events, personalities, and academic departments, as well
as specific independent “beats” assigned by the Director of Media
Relations. (These included selected academic departments, as well as
interest areas and a number of specific annual college events.)
. Developing and coordinating media plans.
. Writing press releases and distributing them in a timely manner that
adheres to a variety of media deadlines.
. Making follow-up calls to pitch news features.
. Preparing itineraries for visiting media, including securing faculty
and student interview subjects, sites, and necessary background materials.
. Conducts writers, radio and television crews around campus.
. Responding to unsolicited media queries in a timely manner.
. Developing and sustaining relationships with media contacts.
. Adding and updating media contacts in the share database.
. Staying familiar with ongoing print and electronic media targets, and
scouting new targets.
. Works in support of college public relations activity, including
media, community, and corporate partnerships. As necessary, supports and
road manages student groups at local and on the road performances.
. Travels domestically and internationally, as appropriate, as public
relations liaison during Berklee “On the Road” events and other press
events in support of the college.
. Contributes to updating and maintenance of the Berklee News portion of
the college’s WWW site.
. Photographs college events for dissemination to news outlets.
Qualifications:
1. Demonstrated success in writing press releases, and in creating and
maintaining relationships with the media that generate quality news
coverage in print and electronic media.
2. Experienced in managing regional, domestic, and international
publicity efforts.
3. Knowledgeable in researching print and electronic media contacts as
needed for a variety of projects.
4. Understanding deadlines for various media targets.
5. A bachelor’s degree with related major and two years’ direct
professional experience in music public relations and media relations
practices.
6. Self-starter with strong organizational skills, and the ability to
work in a focused, strategic fashion and follow assigned projects
through to completion, both independently and in a team.
7. Strong news and feature writing, grammar, editing and proofreading
skills.
8. Understanding of media opportunities and the process of cultivating
media/journalist contacts.
9. Ability to conduct all communications in an articulate, cordial, and
professional manner.
10. Familiarity with television and radio broadcast preparation practices.
11. Familiarity with contemporary music, music technology, and leading
musical figures.
12. Familiarity with World Wide Web content creation.
13. Familiarity with high-end photographic equipment and Photoshop.
14. Familiarity with interview methods and practices.
15. Office and administrative experience, including a working knowledge
of various word processing, desktop publishing, database management, and
spreadsheet systems.
16. Positive attitude within the office and for working with students,
faculty, and staff throughout the college.
17. Willingness to work some nights/weekends, as circumstances require.
18. Bilingual in Spanish, French, or Japanese is desirable but not
strictly essential.
